barbara jean

barbara jean grew up immersed in a world of music and sound, honing her early gift for the violin, and a musical legacy passed from grandmother to mother to daughter, into a sharp eye for songwriting and a skilled hand as a multi-instrumentalist. calling the rugged grandeur of lake superior's north shore home for the last several years, she has developed her craft through constant live performance and has struck out on her own to take her debut record, "the great escape" to fans all across the midwest. classically trained on the viola at the university of minnesota, and self-taught at the banjo, her voice and songs transcend tradition with a mix of americana, appalachia, and an insightful vulnerability in lyric and delivery. after winning the songwriting competition in 2011 at big top chautauqua and making honorable mention in the 2012 telluride troubadour contest, barbara jean earned a slot on the prestigious mountain stage radio show, and has shared bills with such notable acts as trampled by turtles, the pines, low, jonathan edwards, meg hutchinson and more. performing solo, as a duo, or in larger ensembles, she brings a grace and comfort to the stage at once disarming and captivating, gaining her a burgeoning audience and high praise from her peers. poised for the release of her first record, the sky is the limit for this stellar songstress as she takes her songs and her sounds to wider and wider audiences.

the abiders

nothin’ but fun and great music for lovers of blues, country, and rockabilly. swing you sweetie on the dance floor or kick back with a cold one and enjoy the listen. the abiders are equally entertaining as they are talented playing great tunes both covers and originals. julie weisenhorn adds a driving rhythm acoustic and vocals that can be sweet-as-pie one minute, and soulfully bluesy the next. doug molland plays the perfect gritty vintage bluesman, pulling off licks and lyrics that harken back to robert johnson, muddy waters and howling wolf. in the true blues harp tradition, karlos weisenhorn rips up and down the harp putting his own twist on the ol' mouth organ making you think of such heros as junior wells, norton buffalo and paul butterfield. rick anderson keeps the groove going on stand up bass, and his vocals have that great rockabilly twang that makes the crowd go wild.

jillian rae w/ ian alexy

the band's namesake is its multi-talented violinist, lead vocalist, and songwriter, jillian rae. her creative and dynamic style of violin playing along with her lifelong experience as a performer, lend her an assured stage presence. she has an innate ability to create hook-laden tunes affirming the positives of life in the face of struggle and disappointment. with the overarching joy she takes in all things musical, it was inevitable that jillian should form her own band... and not too surprising that it should be in her own name.

since moving to minnesota in 2004 ian thomas alexy has produced three solo records, three records with hobo nephews, and has produced records for other artists as well. this experience in the studio in addition to playing hundreds of shows in minnesota and on the road, has all led to the creation of born on the day of the dead. these recordings show a renewed confidence and focus coupled with a child like sense of exploration.

“scottie miller & the re-uptake inhibitors dig satisfyingly into southern soul, slow blues and a bit of latin/caribbean jazz on their self-released 'elixir for the soul.'  the project is dominated by dramatic ballads and greasy funk. under the fingers of minneapolis keyboard ace miller, the welcome retro sounds of clavinet and fender rhodes in addition to piano and hammond organ, lend varied textures to the inhibitors' superbad grooves.
sounds like dr. john meets the band at bruce springsteen's house."

the tex pistols

tex (brian c. peters), angus (dik shopteau), mr. greenjeans (boyd lee) & cletus ( scooter nelson) started playing together in rochester after they all met at the stillwater correctional facility in the 60s. music became a way to "qualify" for work release status. soon, the awards came...the grammy (best dressed / western), the cma ( worst dressed) and of course the mn. music award ( heavy metal / country). then, after they had made enough money, they all went their separate ways...raised a family, got "real" jobs and settled down in later life, only to meet up again when by a stroke of fate...they all were back in prison? "weapons charges mostly," said tex. soon the band was back in action, (parole) and you will hear the result when they fire up their guns one more time. their motto lives on..."we're loud, loose, & a little cranky" or the familiar "turn it up & go git us some beers!”
